Joie de vivre by Robert Delaunay (1885 - 1941)
Robert Delaunay was a French abstract painter. With his wife Sonia, he founded and was the prime mover of the Orphic movement, a branch of Cubism, an early 20th century avant-garde movement. His work is based on a combination of colours.
Brought up in a bourgeois home, Robert Delaunay very quickly turned his back on that lifestyle, choosing to devote himself to art very early on. At school he was only interested in drawing and natural history, and was accordingly expelled for idleness. He spent two years in stage design, and it was then that he developed a taste for large surfaces, which became a feature of many of his subsequent works.
In 1904 and 1905 he produced his first paintings, landscapes and flowers. Obsessed by cathedrals, from 1907 he embarked on a major work on the monuments of Paris.
Influenced by Cubism, he reduced his palette of colours virtually to monochromaticity. Little by little, he reintroduced colour under the influence of his wife. In the 1920s he diversified and turned to the decorative arts and even to film sets.
The Delaunays were very close to a group of poets and painters that included Apollinaire, Aragon, Cocteau, Breton, Tzara, Kandinsky, Macke or even Léger.
