The artist's biography

Almond branches in bloom by Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent VAN GOGH (1853-1890), a forerunner of fauvism and expressionism, admitted himself to the Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum near Saint-Rémy en Provence in 1889, following an argument with Gauguin and the latter’s departure. During this period he painted with furious energy and hope. His periods of depression and artistic inspiration were quite distinct, and in his creative rage we sense his desire to make up for lost time. His work remains unmarked by his fits of madness and hallucinations.
One of his first compositions at Saint-Rémy is “The Irises”. The whole canvas is devoted to this wonderfully exuberant example of nature.
The deep blue of the thin corollas is in sharp contrast with the cold green of the leaves forming a horizontal banner. The warm colour of the earth forms a firm base for the plants and is repeated in the colours of the flowers in the background. The light green set off by yellow strokes in the field at the back adds to the intense brightness of the irises. In sharp contrast to this multicoloured composition, a large white flower stands out from the painting. The way the canvas is divided up into a variety of large coloured patches of varying shapes is reminiscent of the luminosity of early summer.
VAN GOGH’s prime concern during this period was to get as close to nature as possible and penetrate life as much as possible, as the composition of this picture shows. It is as if the artist were kneeling in front of the pure colour of these flowers, a colour that has a life of its own, revealing and making tangible the very essence of life.
