The artist's biography
The Tiger- Franz Marc (1880 – 1916)
Franz Marc is one of the representatives of German Expressionism. He was an animal painter, etcher, pastellist, watercolourist, lithographer, writer and the co-founder of the “Der Blaue Reiter” group of avant-garde painters with Wassily Kandinsky.
His work ranged from figurative to abstract. The best known part of his work is devoted to portrayals of animals, where his theme was the vital force of nature. He associated animals with qualities (goodness, purity, beauty, truth) that he did not find in Man. He dismissed any portrayal of humans in favour of the animal, and his landscape was simply the vital space in which the latter existed. He tried to paint the way in which the animal saw the world by a formal simplification of objects in the language of colour to illustrate the “absolute being”.
He assigned a meaning to each colour: blue for the austere male and the spiritual; yellow for the female, soft and gay; and red as the colour of violence, fought by the first two colours. His path from figurative to abstract was very gradual. Cleaner lines, the background of the painting no longer representing a landscape but flat solid colour, then the release of the principal subject’s colour.
