The artist's biography

Paul Klee (1879-1940)
Paul Klee was born into a family of musicians in Switzerland on 18 December 1879.
He discovered colour during a voyage to Tunisia in 1914. He realized what the art of painting truly meant; a subordination of matter and gestures to the sensations procured by Nature and the sublime beauty of the countryside.
He taught at the Bauhaus in Germany for 5 years. He was interested in discovering and formulating the different ways to translate and grasp Nature in all of its aspects, whether anatomical, physical, transcendental or cosmic. He wanted to "penetrate the interior rather than reflect the surface". He sought a dynamic relationship between the whole and himself; the images he created, while departing from the visual reality we know, never falsified or distorted it. His most incredible and abstract inventions were the result and the expression of an artistic work that occurred in the subconscious for the most part. The choice of formal elements, geometries and colours, chiaroscuros, the way of combining, blending or opposing them, was not very different from the musical idea he always had in mind.
We are left with the legacy of a sensitive, brilliant artist, the multi-faceted engraver, artist, painter, poet and musician. However, we also have a more intimate and familiar portrait of him as a man who loved cooking and cats. Paul Klee was a modest, reserved and ironic observer of life, who was known for his genius.
