Les Tahitiennes (Tahitian women) Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)

Gauguin’s art is “complex and primitive, chiaroscuro (light and dark), barbaric and refined” wrote O. Mirbeau. His first primitive experience on the island of Tahiti lasted from 1891 to 1893. Despite a whole series of unforeseen difficulties, he discovered a virgin, uncorrupted world with delight. His canvass celebrates the joys of a simple and pure life in the blinding brightness of the sky or the warm shadow of mush vegetation; he extols the sensuality of voluptuous bodies fresh as flowers, or the mystery of the spirits hovering over the tribe. His chromatic harmonies, which strive to symbolically express a spiritual dimension, are sumptuously rich and the form convey an absolute Synthetism. His paintings are not just exotic, they reveal the influence of Maori art.
