The artist's biography
Angel – RAPHAEL (1483-1520)
Raphael's life was short but crowned with undisputed glory. A pupil of Perugino's, he worked energetically in Perugia, Florence and Rome, and was the chief architect and superintendent of buildings at the courts of Pope Julius II and Leo X.
Raphael's work is dominated by a sense of calm; all is harmonious, balanced, symmetrical, perfectly ordered, serene and portrayed on a broad and expressive scale. Each of his works in his twenty-year creative period is another discovery in a century that saw the birth, crisis and dissolution of the human and classical Renaissance.
Along with Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael was part of an inseparable and essential triad who mutually influenced one another and made an everlasting mark on the history of art. His work stands as a synthesis and culmination of the artistic trends of the period.
