In 1886, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made an irrevocable choice. He left his family home in Albi and moved to a studio in Montmartre, where he lived until 1887. He came to know the local inhabitants of this quarter well; the workers drowning their troubles in a glass of wine in the bistro, the girls from the brothels, the dancers from the cabarets, and the stars of popular shows like Jane Avril, Yvette Guilbert, or the cabaret artist, Aristide Bruant. He painted them all with great humanity and absolute respect. He captured what made them all alive, and what made them unique. In 1891, he began to design posters in a concise and forceful style, initially for the Moulin Rouge. He was the most audacious, profound, innovative and prolific creator of posters and lithographs of the time, producing over 300 in all.
