The artist's biography

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944)
Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow on 4 December 1866. The city fascinated him from his earliest childhood. He fell under the charm of its purple sunsets, fantastic skies and extravaganza of colours. He later wrote: "Moscow resonates victorious, like the powerful finale of a gigantic orchestra. The pink, mauve, yellow, white, pistachio green and flamboyant red of the houses and churches sing their score there, with the incredibly green grass, the snow and the red enclosure formed by the Kremlin’s walls (sic)." Moscow became the artist’s inexhaustible source of inspiration.
Yet he wandered around the world from a very early age. He needed to work in a group and he founded, among others, “Der blaue Reiter” (the blue rider) with Franz Marc. He returned to Russia at the outbreak of World War I. He was assigned important official duties after the revolution. He created and installed new museums throughout the country. In 1921 he moved to Germany to teach at the Bauhaus. In 1933, Wassily and his wife, Nina, moved to live in Neuilly, France, where their circle of friends included Arp, Miro, Breton and Duchamp. He became a French citizen in 1939 and lived there until his death.
In his book "Concerning the spiritual in art", he set out the theoretical bases of the new pictorial language with great refinement, building a first bridge to abstract art. Kandinsky was a painter, art theorist and writer; a man of culture and a philosopher of his time. He began his artistic career exploring colours, then form and finally the content of the painting. He came to abstract art through intuition, sensitivity and analysis.
