The artist's biography
"La jeune fille" by Gustav Klimt
The son of a goldsmith engraver and an opera singer, Gustav KLIMT(1862-1918) grew up in an environment imbued with artistic ambition. More than any other artist he was to become the exponent of the decadence and collapse of a society still deeply rooted in the old Austro-Hungarian empire.
A key figure of Art Nouveau and Viennese symbolism, his art is linear, voluptuously ornamental, luxuriant and sensual. His use of gold and other precious metals, and the shift in colour from soft to bright and luminous tones, clearly shows his Byzantine influence.
KLIMT was the painter of woman par excellence and his work constantly explores the relation between eroticism and death. He portrays the frontiers of an indecent and morbid world. His “La Jeune Fille” (The Young Girl) is a highly sensuous and complex composition. The seven figures of the young girl are caught up in a rising whirlwind of torsos, arms and legs, first visible then swallowed up by the curls of the veils and ribbons among the decorations of the dress and flower petals. The pearly skinned nudes curl up and mingle with the blues, violets, greens, yellows, oranges and reds in a delicate erotic game that is suggestive rather than explicit, forming a sort of perpetually moving wheel.
