Pascal Magis was born on 1st April 1955 in Aurillac (Cantal), but he spent his childhood at Meyrals, a village in the Périgord Noir. After graduating from the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs (National School of the Decorative Arts) in Limoges, he took up tapestry. As all authentic creators, he has an inner fire he relentlessly kindles. What’s his secret? He owes it to no one; he simply drags it out from his guts day by day. His mentors, if he has any, are invisible, because he does not copy them. Nothing in his work remotely calls to mind the lessons of the big names in contemporary art.
Prone to frenzied creative spells, he infuses his non-figurative based painting with a dynamism and enthusiasm tempered only by rare moments of calm. Observers are fired by his work, smitten by the rhythm and intensity of his original expressionism, made up of coloured fields and traces of action painting.
Needless to say, Pascal Magis’ painting is spontaneous rather than intellectual, improvisation playing the key role. He executes all his works in the same way, guided by instinct. As a result, each stroke is an outpouring, a cry from the heart, an act of bravery, a deliverance. Something from within, something that words in their infinite diversity cannot describe; confronted with such urgency and force, language can but confess to its impotence.
