Café de nuit – VAN GOGH – 1888
"Van Gogh was for a time fascinated by the problem of describing nocturnal scenes and night-time skies studded with stars. He loved the range of blues of the Southern skies with their rich and deep tones just as much as the sun-drenched yellows of his paintings. Once again, the scenery provides him with a pretext to associate primary colours in his painting: yellow and a deep blue set off by the black. Here, on the small sleepy square, the café radiates a halo of light, while the stars appear to open out like flowers of light in the dark sky".
