The artist's biography
"Jazz" 1990 - Etching by Alain Bar
Alain BAR was born in 1947 in Albertville, in the Savoy region, where he now lives. He did his training as an engraver at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Valence. After sports gestures, his main source of inspiration, he is now striving to capture musical gestures in the special world of jazz, more particularly through a noble instrument, the double bass. Powerful lines and warm shades blend in these sober, dense works that are full of vitality. The inclusion of text and fragments of music adds a sense of balance and achievement to these etchings. "His interest in the sign and texture allows him to play with the double bass’ novel shapes, its generous and flowing curves. The lines of the drawing play on rhythm, variations on the instrument and perspective, in their instantaneous relationship." "Whether martial arts gestures or jazz instruments and musicians, he retains the lines’ waves and cuts, these inspiring lines that form a continuous variation around the captured gesture." Jean RAMALLO.
